Fluctus Suspension Lamp

THE PROJECT AIMS TO REPRESENT ONE OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS SUBMERGED IN OUR OCEANS: THE GHOST NETS.

640,000 tons of fishing nets are abandoned in our oceans every year, turning millions of sea creatures into victims.
Fishing nets are also made of nylon, a high performance plastic that is now also completely recyclable.

Fluctus Lamp is made of some coloured nets from the oceans melted together with ECONYL®, the translucent regenerated nylon produced through an innovative and sustainable chemical process that regenerate waste such as fishing and aquaculture nets and other nylon waste.

The illuminated surfaces represent the ocean seen from an underwater view, and the light coming from above filters and passes through the surface, creating light effects through the material.
Fluctus Lamp has been designed in such a way that the light intensity can be changed and light animations can be set using an app to be installed on any smartphone, with the aim of creating infinite and personal underwater light scenarios.
Through the transparency and light reflections of ECONYL®, the coloured fishing nets seem to float, dramatically tangled as in the real oceans, as an abstract reflection about the fragile condition of our oceans.

For this project alcarol is working with Aquafil, that’s currently the only manufacturer capable of developing and promoting the regeneration of nylon by depolymerizing the recovered material and repolymerizing ECONYL® regenerated nylon with exceptional characteristics, like new.

In its Slovenian factory – unique in the world, result of four years of research and development – nylon yarns are currently produced and then used in clothing by the fashion industry and for textile upholstery such as carpets and rugs, in interior design.
The objective of alcarol project is the use of regenerated nylon in the form of solid material in various thicknesses and shapes, workable to obtain objects of different types, such as panels for coverings and other uses, fashion accessories, design objects, small or large.
The peculiarity and innovative aspect of the material we created is to incorporate some small pieces of net recovered from the ocean within the mass, which melting together with regenerated nylon give rise to interesting effects, leaving traces of the origins in the material itself, which in turn can be infinitely repolymerized, recycled, recreated and remoulded infinitely, without any loss in quality.

Fluctus Lamp has been designed in such a way that the light intensity can be changed and light animations can be set using an app to be installed on any smartphone, with the aim of creating infinite and personal underwater light scenarios.
